Our Why
We were asked recently, "Why do you do what you do?", our immediate answer was "because we are a team!" To us, what we do is not nearly as important as why we do it. When we decided to become entrepreneurs, we tossed around a lot of ideas but when it came down to deciding which to pursue, it always came back to our "why": to be able to be with the people we love most, most of the time.
Collaboration
Not only do we enjoy working together, our skill sets compliment each other and we need to collaborate all of our skill sets to make the business work. The dictionary definition of teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal, and that's what we try to achieve. We now operate 3 businesses together. Kent Tent is a party tent rental company, Warriner Ag is a precision agriculture services business, and Hat Trick Farms remains the home base where we grow tulips, daffodils, winterberries, corn, soybeans, wheat and make maple syrup. As business partners, all decisions are made together. Yes, we have disagreements, we're siblings remember, but in the end we come together, each valuing each other's skills and what we each add to the team.
What's For Lunch
Since becoming business partners we brought back a family tradition started back when we were in elementary school. That tradition is family lunches. In elementary school Mom picked us up and we went home to eat almost everyday. First because we were such slow eaters (and ate so much) that we couldn't finish our lunch in the 20 minutes allowed, and secondly because we didn't want to miss the hot meal and conversations going on at home. At those lunch time meals as kids, everyone gathered around the kitchen table for a hot meal. It was often a full house with workers, family and friends joining us if they were there that day.
Today lunches are no different. No matter which direction the day takes each of us, if we are close enough to have lunch together we do. It is a great way for a daily unconventional team meeting, and a chance to visit with each other.
Family
The best part about what we do at Hat Trick Farms is that we are a family operation. We are not a team because we work together. We are a team because we respect, trust and care for each other. We are blessed to be able to both work and play together everyday.
